Moss Wood Ribbon Vale 2023 Merlot

INTRODUCTION

The Mugford family purchased the Ribbon Vale vineyard in 2000, in time for that vintage. Located less than two kilometres from Moss Wood, the property comprised an established, dry-grown vineyard planted in 1977, making it one of the oldest in Margaret River. From the outset, Ribbon Vale represented both a continuation of our work with Cabernet Sauvignon and an introduction to varieties not grown at Moss Wood itself, most notably Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc.

Since acquisition, our efforts have focused on refining both the vineyard and the wines, guided by an increasing understanding of how best to express the character of this site. Trellis upgrades, grafting and ongoing developments in the winery have all contributed to this process. In particular, Ribbon Vale provided our first experience working with Merlot, and over time our approach has evolved as we have come to understand its behaviour under the dry-grown conditions and gravelly soils of the property.

While numerous changes have taken place over the past two decades, this newsletter concentrates on the two red wines produced from the vineyard: Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon and Ribbon Vale Merlot.

A significant development in Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon has been the gradual adjustment of clonal composition. The vineyard was originally planted to the SA126 clone, which produces wines with lifted aromatics and firm tannin structure, often showing brighter red-fruited characters. While these attributes contribute freshness, in isolation they can produce a more angular structure and abrupt tannin than we seek for Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon.

By contrast, the Houghton clone consistently delivers darker fruit expression, showing blackcurrant, cassis and blue-fruited notes, together with elegant tannin depth and refinement. Over time, it became clear that increasing the proportion of Houghton clone would strengthen the wine’s structure and longevity while retaining a small component of SA126 to preserve aromatic lift.

This led to the establishment of the Young Houghton block on the eastern side of the property, together with the grafting of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon vines to Houghton clone Cabernet Sauvignon. The process began with new plantings in 2005 and continued with grafting work in 2017. Today, the resulting wine comprises 90% Houghton clone and 10% SA126, a balance that reflects our current understanding of the best expression of Ribbon Vale Cabernet Sauvignon.

In Merlot, attention has focused on increasing clonal diversity. When Ribbon Vale was planted in the late 1970s, only a single clone, D3V14, was available in Australia. Imported from UC Davis in 1965, it formed the basis of early Merlot plantings in Margaret River and has proven to be a reliable, moderate-yielding selection.

Over time, additional clones have become available internationally, offering differences in yield, tannin structure and flavour profile. In 2022, we selected three clones for grafting onto existing Merlot vines in the West Block:

  • Q45-14, of Italian origin, noted for smaller bunches, lower yields and structured tannin
  • ENTAV-INRA® 181, originating from Gironde, producing deeply coloured, fruit-driven wines
  • ENTAV-INRA® 343, also from Gironde, characterised by low yields and firm tannin structure

The first crop from these grafted vines was harvested in 2024, with their influence expected to appear progressively in future vintages of Ribbon Vale Merlot. Early indications suggest improved aromatic complexity and greater structural definition alongside the existing D3V14 plantings.

These changes represent a gradual evolution rather than a departure. As with all work at Ribbon Vale, the objective remains to improve our understanding of the vineyard and to refine how its character is expressed in the wines.

vintage notes

The 2022/23 growing season at Ribbon Vale proceeded without major disruption and allowed the vineyard to progress in a measured and consistent manner. For the 2022 calendar year, rainfall totalled 1114mm, approximately 9% above the long-term average. For a dry-grown vineyard, this resulted in adequate soil moisture reserves at the commencement of the growing season.

Spring conditions were generally favourable, although rainfall during flowering influenced final yields. Between October and the end of November, while the vines were flowering and setting fruit, 89mm of rain was recorded. While not excessive, this rainfall coincided with flowering and is reflected in reduced fruit set and the lower-than-average yields recorded for several varieties, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.

Following flowering, conditions became relatively dry. From the beginning of December through to harvest, only 18.8mm of rain fell. This limited rainfall, together with the soil moisture established earlier in the season, allowed ripening to continue without evident water stress while maintaining low disease pressure. Canopies remained healthy, and fruit development progressed steadily rather than being driven by rapid sugar accumulation.

Summer temperatures were moderate, with no prolonged heat events. Ripening was unhurried, with harvest commencing in late March and extending into April. Cabernet Sauvignon cropped at 5.6 tonnes per hectare, approximately 17% below its long-term average of 6.73 t/ha, and was harvested three days later than average. Merlot produced 5.4 t/ha, around 28% below its long-term average, and was harvested nine days later than usual.

Taken together, the distribution of rainfall, moderate temperatures and restrained yields resulted in an extended ripening period across the vineyard. Fruit was harvested without pressure, allowing flavour and tannin development to keep pace with sugar accumulation. The wines reflect these conditions and the stress-free nature of the 2023 season.

PRODUCTION NOTES

All fruit was hand-picked and delivered to the winery where it was destemmed and sorted. Fermentation took place in small open fermenters, seeded with multiple yeast strains, with temperatures controlled to a maximum of 32°C. Ferments were hand plunged three times daily to manage extraction, with each batch remaining on skins for a total of 13 days.

After pressing, the wine completed malolactic fermentation in tank before being racked to 228-litre French oak barriques, of which 17% were new. Maturation occurred for a period of 28 months with the final blend comprising 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 2.5% each of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec. These blending components are used to refine structure and balance rather than alter the fundamental character of the wine.

The wine was assessed for the use of fining agents, however, none were found to be beneficial to the tannin balance. The wine was sterile filtered and bottled on 4th August 2025.

Tasting Notes

Colour and Condition:
Deep brick red with youthful purple hues; bright condition.

Nose:
Blackcurrant and mulberry are most evident, supported by bay leaf, cedar, graphite and subtle tarry notes.

Palate:
Medium to full bodied, with layered dark fruit flavours of red currant, dark cherry and blackberry, carried by fine, persistent tannins. The structure is firm but well balanced, with fresh acidity providing length and definition. Oak influence is present but restrained.

CELLARING

The Ribbon Vale 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is suitable for extended cellaring. While it can most certainly be enjoyed in its youth, it will benefit from time in bottle. We recommend a minimum of 10 years, with full maturity expected between 20 and 25 years.

PRODUCTION NOTES

All fruit was hand-picked. After destemming, the Merlot was placed into closed fermenters and cold soaked to enhance colour and aroma before being warmed and seeded for primary fermentation. Extraction was managed by pump overs, with temperatures maintained below 32°C throughout the fermentation. The fruit remained on skins for 14 days before being pressed.

Following pressing and malolactic fermentation, the wine was matured in 228-litre French oak barriques, with 18% new oak for 28 month. The final blend comprises 86% Merlot, with 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Cabernet Franc. The wine remained unfined and was sterile filtered and bottled on 4th August 2025.

Tasting Notes

Colour and Condition:
Medium to deep ruby hue; bright condition.

Nose:
Plum, blackberry and dark cherry, with violet, spice and earthy undertones.

Palate:
Medium to full bodied, with generous fruit of black cherry and mulberry, supported by supple but clearly defined tannins. The balance is sound, with fresh acidity and a savoury finish.

CELLARING

Ribbon Vale Merlot shows its best form in seasons where ripening proceeds steadily rather than being driven by heat. While approachable in its youth, the wine is clearly structured for extended cellaring. We recommend a minimum of 10 years in bottle, with full maturity expected between 20 and 25 years.
