Usung hero

Australian semillon, from the leaner age-worthy styles of the Hunter through to the richer lemony styles of the Barossa and Clare and the slightly more herbaceous examples of Margaret River is a wonderful variety. These days, sadly, it exists largely as a worthy bedfellow to sauvignon blanc, especially in Margaret River. But in its own right it is superb, offering excellent drinking as youngster while – even outside the Hunter, where the wines can age for 20 years or more – providing medium-term cellaring.

Moss Wood 2016 Semillon

I just love this semillon. lt is so light and fragrant, yet with a driving inner intensity of lemony fruit. lt’s medium-bodied with a crunchy, sweet fruit character balanced by a fine, persistent acidity on the finish. Lip-smacking and
beautiful texture at the same time. This is the result of simple basic winemaking that gets this excellent fruit into the bottle with a minimum of fuss.  (Best drinking: Now to 2027.)
