This vineyard has been producing some of Australia’s best merlots in recent years. This one is perhaps the most refined and elegantly poised of any I can recall. The vintage has clearly played an important part. The nose shows all of those black fruit, spicy, slightly mocha-like characters. While the seamlessly integrated medium to full-bodied palate delivers with such exquisite elegance. Restrained and poised it might be, but there is an intensity here that delivers with a sustained finish. A thoroughly exquisite merlot.

Cellaring

Ribbon Vale Merlot shows its best form in seasons where ripening proceeds steadily rather than being driven by heat. While approachable in its youth, the wine is clearly structured for extended cellaring. We recommend a minimum of 10 years in bottle, with full maturity expected between 20 and 25 years.

The start

Planted in 1969, Moss Wood is a founding estate of the Margaret River wine region. Clare and Keith Mugford have been tending the vineyard and making wine at Moss Wood since 1984 and 1979, respectively. Their exacting viticulture produces grapes of excellent quality, creating a stable of fine wines distinguished by their consistency and ability to age superbly.
