Moss Wood 2021 Amy’s – Ned Goodwin, jamessuckling.com

A looser knit equivalent of a second wine at this address. Lovely, savory drinking. Mid-weighted and beautifully scented, with crystalline redcurrant rolled in sage and green olives. A sappy, verdant edge, unravelling across the seams. Nothing intrusive, mind you. Drink or hold. June, 2023

Moss Wood 2021 Amy’s – James Halliday, The Weekend Australian Magazine

A 68/20/7/5 per cent blend of estate-grown cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec and petit verdot, its colour is bright, fresh crimson, the bouquet fragrant, and the palate is already complete and balanced. It is purpose-built for consumption over the next three or four years, but if for any reason it’s left unopened for 10 years it…

A True Wine History – Reviews of Moss Wood 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon, Moss Wood Ribbon Vale 2022 Elsa, Moss Wood 2021 Amy’s – James Halliday, The Weekend Australian Magazine

Margaret River: a true wine history Any account of the history of winemaking in Margaret River must acknowledge the true father of the region: Dr John Gladstones AM, a scientist of awesome intelligence. Much of his working life as an agronomist was devoted to lupins, a significant source of fodder for cattle. Central to this…

Moss Wood 2021 Amy’s – Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

Red fruits, mulberry and cherry, hazelnut chocolate, mint nougat, and some biscuit spice. It’s supple and fleshy, quite the chocolate nuts flavour, juicy spiced poached strawberry, light grainy tannin, and a succulent and nutty finish of good length. There’s almost a sweet red apple flavour too. It’s at ease with itself now, and drinks very…

Moss Wood 2021 Amy’s – Stuart Knox, The Real Review

A bright ruby red colour. Raspberry and crushed violet aromas lift from the glass. Fresh and juicy on the palate, there’s a joyous vibrancy to the wine that keeps you entertained on repeat visits. The tannins are almost playful in their fine-grained persistence, and a hint of freshening acidity as it lingers long adds to…

Moss Wood 2021 Amy’s – Winsor Dobbin, Winsor’s Choice

This is not the most expensive wine in the excellent Moss Wood range, nor is it the highest profile, But it is certainly one of the best value: a medium-bodied Bordeaux blend from Margaret River with impeccable balance and dangerous drinkability. The blend is 68% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 7% malbec and 5% petit verdot…

Moss Wood 2021 Amy’s – Angus Hughson, Winepilot

This bright and aromatic Cabernet Sauvignon blend is beautifully approachable as it delivers an elegant expression of Margaret River. It opens with aromas of fruits of the forest and dried herbs with floral touches and a gravelly edge. Mid-weight and more reserved than the current releases of Ribbon Vale, a bright line of fresh acidity…

PRODUCTION NOTES

The fruit was hand-picked and delivered to the winery, where it was hand-sorted and destemmed. The must was then pumped into stainless-steel closed fermenters and inoculated for primary fermentation. During primary fermentation, pump-overs were conducted 3 times per day to enhance colour and flavour extraction. Once primary fermentation was complete the wine was pressed and then transferred to 228L French Oak Barriques, none of which were new. Malolactic fermentation was conducted in barrel after which, the wine was racked into tank; blended, analysed and finally, returned to barrel and aged for 18 months. In July of 2022, the wine was racked from barrel to tank and blended. Fining trials were conducted to assess tannin balance. It was decided that the wine was improved with a slight fining with skim milk. On the 20th of July 2022, the 2021 Moss Wood Amy’s was sterile filtered and bottled.

TASTING NOTES

Colour and Condition:
Deep, brick red; bright condition.

Nose:
The nose is a lifted expression of all of the varieties in the blend. The Merlot contributes rich and jammy, blackcurrant notes accented with watermelon aromas from the Malbec. The Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the varietal mix with heaped dollops of blueberry and red currants. As the wine begins to relax in the glass, the textural; charry and chocolatey notes begin to materialise.

Palate:
Carrying over from the nose the blueberries and red currants are immediately apparent. The firm tannin structure is accented nicely by the generosity contributed by the medium-full body of the mid-palate. The acidity has a gentle linearity which pairs nicely with the texture derived from the French Oak. The vibrancy and liveliness of the fruit weight makes this wine very appealing and should be enjoyed while in its youth.

CELLARING

The Amy’s was made in a youthful fruit-forward style that is very approachable as a young wine. The tannin structure was well-balanced and does not need an extended aging period in bottle.
